Circling Stars by Jackie Robinson using Basic Blacks and Beiges

Wendy Sheppard talks about her Shimmering Constellation design:

What attracted you to the Gold Standard/Simply Sterling collection?
I like the metallic accents  in the prints and colors of the collection.

Can you talk about how fabric placement enhances this design?
When I work with a fabric collection that has multiple main colors, I try to sprinkle the colors all over the quilt design. So that's why you see a mix of gold, gray and black in the design. The reason the design looks more complicated than it actually is rests solely on the fabric placement for this design.  I think of it as optical illusion at play. At least for me, whenever I see a quilt with many colors/fabrics, I automatically go into a "WOW" mode and think it is a difficult quilt.

How did you come up with this design?
I started with the stars -- but then I felt like having stars all over the quilt design is too predictable.  That's when I came up with the alternate block to give the design a bit more interest.  I then softened the edges of the other blocks with gold on white prints to give a bit of "halo" effect to the star blocks.

What do you like best about this quilt?
I like it for many reasons - I like that it is a traditional quilt, but with striking visual elements for a home decor piece to add fun statement to a room.  What I love it best is that it is an easy quilt to construct, but with much more to offer in the final design and layout.

Jackie Robinson talks about her Circling Stars design:

What inspired your Basic Blacks and Beiges collection?
It came from when I was a quilt shop owner and could never get enough good blacks and beiges. The fabrics have varying values, which adds interest when they’re all used together.

Tell us about the star block in Circling Stars.
One of the artists in the Benartex design studio, Liz Kolansky, created this block for the front cover of some marketing materials. It is a block that is reminiscent of 54-40 or Fight, but it isn’t. I really liked it and asked Liz if I could use it for a quilt design.

Tell us about the layout.
The black setting triangles make the star blocks pop. Then simple straight borders frame the design.

What do you like best about the quilt?
The illusion of circles created by the blocks. It’s circles without actually piecing circles.

Recreating Antique Quilts

If you're a faithful reader of our blog and Benartex fabric lover, chances are you are pretty familiar with Wendy Sheppard's name. We always enjoy seeing what she does with Benartex fabrics--from quilts featured in magazines to free pattern designs featured on our website to tutorials included in our blog hops. Today we're featuring Wendy's book, Recreating Antique Quilts. The book shares exactly what the name says--quilts in Wendy's signature style that are re-interpreted from antique treasures. We think you'll like it as much as we do! Read on to learn more about Wendy's book and see some of the projects in it.

What inspired your topic choice for your book?
I have always been fascinated by the rich quilting history in America ever since I started quilting about 10 years ago. The historical connection means even more for someone like myself who didn't grow up in the States. I relish in looking at antique quilts.  I often felt a little sad because many of the antique quilts do not bear records of the makers.  I often imagine the friendships among the quilting women - the joys and sorrows they share with each other whether through peace or war.

When I was approached to write a book by Landauer Publishing, I decided to re-interpret a few of the antique quilts for today's quilters, using today's fabrics and techniques in an attempt to connect the quilters today with the quilting treasures of the past.

How long was the process from start to finish?
I think from start to finish, it was about 1 year.  But as long as I have been quilting, the desire to re-make and re-interpret antique quilts have always been near and dear to my heart.

What is your favorite project in the book?
That is hard to pick - it's like a mother to play favoritism and pick her favorite child. Ha!  A few of my favorites are: Calico Trail (because of the simple blocks that make a very pleasing visual effect), Oh, Happy Stars (because the colors of the quilt are so happy, and the applique of swirls and bird just steal my heart!), Feathery Formation (because of the space available for quilting), and the two DAR-inspired applique projects (because applique adds additional dimensions to any quilts). (See a collage of all the projects in Recreating Antique Quilts here.)

Oh, Happy Stars

Can you tell us a bit more about one of these projects?
Sure ! The Ivory Baltimore Wallhanging -- it is made with Benartex's Blush fabrics.  I took two blocks from a DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) quilt, and re-interpreted them for a banner project.  The project is small enough for quilters to finish and practice on their applique skills for those who haven't done many applique quilts.
Ivory Baltimore Wall Hanging
The colors of the project are inspired by old French red on cream needlework projects.  I reversed the colors, and used cream applique on red for Ivory Baltimore.  The left applique is actually half of an
applique block.  The inspiration came motifs of antique Quaker needlework
samples that are oftentimes halved at the borders. Quilting was allover feathers on around the applique. I am very thrilled about the warm responses I have received on Ivory Baltimore.

How did you choose the quilts you used for inspiration?
For the quilts in the book, I have mainly done my research online.  I often visit museums to admire antique quilts, but none of them became basis for my projects for this book.  That will happen though -- I have a few ideas.  I chose the quilts based on how versatile the designs were to adapt for today's quilters, and how easily the quilters themselves can personalize and customize the projects to make their own masterpieces.

What is the most interesting comment you’ve gotten from someone who has read your book?
The most interesting (and heartening) comment I have gotten is that the quilter could immediately relate the book cover with me from that bird and swirl applique.

Tell us your favorite thing about the book.
It is so me -- the projects, the presentation and the layout of the book. The editorial staff at Landauer did a most tremendous job in reflecting my personality throughout the book.  I have been doubly pleased that Recreating Antique Quilts was awarded the silver medal of Independent Book Publishers Association's Benjamin Franklin Award.

Congratulations, Wendy!

Burlap Brights Blog Hop: Day 11

Welcome to the eleventh and last day of our Burlap Brights Block Hop! We hope you've enjoyed the eleven block tutorials our designing friends have been sharing here this week and last week. Be sure to stop by each day to see a new block and have a chance to win some Burlap Brights for yourself!

Today, Wendy from Ivory Spring is sharing her block. Check out her tutorial and then scroll to the bottom of this post to enter for a chance to win a fat quarter bundle of the six Burlap Brights prints featured in our hop.

Hello Everyone, this is Wendy from Ivory Spring.  I am brightly happy to be participating in Benartex's Burlap Brights blog hop.  It's always fun to be part of Benartex's hops.

So the idea is to use 6 colors from the fabric line to construct a 12" block.  Because I am kind of on a personal quest to see how many ways I could doctor and use the sawtooth star block, my block is a sawtooth star variation block.  I am calling my it Happy Go Around Star!

Supplies and cutting:
For this block, we will be using all 6 Burlap Bright fabrics and 1/8y of white ground fabric.
From white ground fabric, cut
4 (4" x 4") squares
6 (3 1/2" x 3 1/2") squares
4 (1 1/2" x 3 ") rectangles

From blue, green and purple fabrics, cut
1 (4" x 4") square

From red fabric, cut
1 (4" x 4") square
1 (1 1/2" x 1 1/2") square

From yellow and orange fabrics, cut
1 (3 1/2" x 3 1/2") square
2 (2" x 2") squares

Block assembly:
1.  Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all the colored squares, except for the (1 1/2" x 1 1/2") red square.

2.  Using the green square as example.  Place (4" x 4") green square, right sides together, on 1 (4" x 4") white square.  Sew 1/4" away from, and on right and left sides of drawn line.

Cut along drawn line.  Open and press to yield 2 half-square-triangle (HST) units.

Repeat for the red, blue, purple (4" x 4") as well as the yellow and orange (3 1/2" x 3 1/2") squares, using white squares of corresponding sizes.
3.  Lining up the diagonal line of the HST units against the 45 degree line of the ruler, trim the red, purple, blue and green HST units to measure 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" raw edge to raw edge, and yellow and orange HST units to measure 3" x 3" raw edge to raw edge.

4.  Making Block Center.
Sew 1 yellow HST unit and 1 orange HST unit to the opposite long sides of 1 (1 1/2" x 3") white rectangles.   Repeat to make 2 pieced rows.
Sew 2 (1 1/2" x 3") white rectangles to the opposite sides of 1 (1 1/2" x 1 1/2") red squares into a pieced rows.

Sew the rows together to complete block center.

5.  Sew 1 green HST and 1 purple HST together into a pieced column.  Repeat to make 2 columns, and add to the right and left sides of block center.

6.  Making Corner Unit.
Place 1 (2" x 2") yellow square, right sides together, on 1 (3 1/2" x 3 1/2") white square.  Sew on drawn line.  Trim 1/4" away from sewn line.  Open and press to reveal yellow corner triangle.

Repeat to make a total of 2 yellow and 2 orange corner units.
7.  Arrange and sew together 1 yellow corner unit, 1 orange corner unit, 1 red HST and 1 purple HST into a pieced row.  Repeat to make 2 rows, and add to the remaining opposite sides of block center to complete block.

Quilt Option:
You can easily make a number of these blocks, and sew them to make a quilt.

My husband walked by my work station, and commented how he liked the block!  So, I will be making a few more blocks myself to turn it into a quilt!
Thank you for stopping by!  I hope you have liked my Happy Go Around Star block.  The colors sure make one happy, don't they?!
Even more so, I hope you have enjoyed seeing the other designers' creatively designed blocks!

Have a great day!
