Welcome to the seventh day of our Burlap Brights Block Hop! We hope you'll enjoy the eleven block tutorials our designing friends will be sharing here this week and next. Be sure to stop by each day to see a new block and have a chance to win some Burlap Brights for yourself!
Today, Stephanie Sheridan of Stitched Together Studios her wonky block design. Check out the tutorial and then at the bottom of the post, find out how you can enter for a chance to win a fat quarter bundle of the six Burlap Brights prints featured in our hop.
Hi, I am Stephanie from Stitched Together Studios. For as long as I can remember there has been a sewing studio in my house. Having grown up with a quilting mom (professional long-arm quilter Linda Kroeger Leathersich) fiber arts has always been a part of my life. After Spring Quilt Market in Pittsburgh in 2009, my mom and I became business partners. Mom (an award-winning long-arm quilter, quilt maker and teacher) and I (quilt maker, designer and pattern writer) launched our joint business venture “Stitched Together Studios.” We have designed over 150 quilts for Benartex in the last 6 years and love every minute of our job (well, maybe not every minute … but most of them!).
OK … enough about me … on to the tutorial!
I love everything about these fabrics and decided to do
something a little out of the box (for me at least). I tend towards symmetry
and order in my quilt design, so creating this slightly wonky block with some
improvisational cutting was a bit of a challenge (you don’t even want to know
how many test blocks I made!). It ended up being a modern abstract Picasso-esque
block. Please enjoy my “Abstract Rainbow”!
Tools:
Sewing Machine, Iron, Ironing Surface, Scissors, Cutting
Mat, Rotary Cutter, a 4-1/2” ruler and a
6-1/2” ruler (I like the Creative Grids
ones!)
Cutting:
From the Blue and Red FQ cut:
(1) 3” square, (1) 3-1/2” X
4-1/2” rectangle, and (1) 3-1/2” X 7-1/2” rectangle
From the Green and Orange FQ cut:
(1) 3” X 3-1/2” rectangle,
(1) 3-1/2” X 4-1/2” rectangle, (1) 3-1/2” X 6” rectangle, and (1) 2-1/2” X 7-1/2”
rectangle
From the Purple and Yellow FQ cut:
(1) 3” square, (1) 3” X
3-1/2” rectangle, and (1) 3-1/2” X 6” rectangle
Step 1:
Sew the following pieces together:
BLOCK 1: Red 3” to Yellow 3” X 3-1/2”, press, then add Yellow 3-1/2” X
6”
BLOCK 2: Yellow 3” to Orange 3-1/2”, press, then add Orange 3-1/2” X 6”
BLOCK 3: Blue 3” to Purple 3-1/2”, press, then add Purple 3-1/2” X 6”
BLOCK 4: Purple 3” to Green
3-1/2”, press, then add Green 3-1/2” X 6”
Step 2:
Lay the 4 blocks on your cutting mat and get out your 4-1/2”
ruler. Trim the 4 blocks as shown – tilting your ruler to the right for Blocks
1 and 2, and to the left for blocks 3 and 4. The degree of tilt is totally up
to you – this is where the “improvisational cutting” comes in to play.
Step 3:
Sew the following pieces to the 4-1/2” squares:
BLOCK 1: Orange
3-1/2” X 4-1/2”, press, then add Orange 3-1/2” X 7-1/2”
BLOCK 2: Red
3-1/2” X 4-1/2”, press, then add Red 3-1/2” X 7-1/2”
BLOCK 3: Green
3-1/2” X 4-1/2”, press, then add Green 3-1/2” X 7-1/2”
BLOCK
4: Blue 3-1/2” X 4-1/2”, press, then add
Blue 3-1/2” X 7-1/2”
Step 4:
Lay the 4 blocks on your cutting mat and get out your 6-1/2”
ruler. Trim the 4 blocks as shown – tilting your ruler to the right. Once again - the degree of tilt is totally up to you!
Step 5:
Sew blocks together.
I hope that you enjoy making my Abstract Rainbow Block!
