Autumn in the Air: Thankful

It may be May, but Autumn is in the Air! Our newest fall collections are hitting quilt shops right now, and we're introducing them here on the blog and sharing some autumn quilt inspiration all week long.

Today we're featuring Amanda Murphy's Thankful collection. We asked Amanda to talk to us about her newest fabric line.

What prompted you to do a fall collection?
I think almost every fall themed collection out there that I see is traditional. I thought there was room for a collection that was not traditional—something more modern.

Tell us about your palette.
I wanted it to have a home dec feel—like a Pottery Barn look, that would feel more modern. I knew I wanted some prints to have a brown background, and I chose some brighter colors, like the teals and greens I’ve used before, to pop off the brown.

We love the panel!
The panel features a couple of the prints that didn’t make it into the collection on their own. It can be used for quick home décor projects—a wall hanging, or even pillows.

Can you tell us about a few of the prints?
I love the medallion print for borders. You’ll also see a few of these medallions blow up larger on the panel.

Autumnwind is obviously influenced by quilting. The other tonal in the collection, the diamonds, are very structured, so I wanted this to be more organic. You can loosely follow the lines to quilt over it.

What is your favorite print?
Definitely the brown feature print with the big cream pumpkins!

Autumn Leaves

A little more inspiration: Sandra from Mmm! Quilts created her Autumn Winds quilt using pre-cut strips from the Thankful collection.

Sandra says, "Although it is a bit hard to think of autumn when it is early spring here in the northern hemisphere, when I saw Amanda Murphy had a new fall line out, I was smitten! Her fresh modern colours for this season inspired me to remake my first published pattern for this hop."

We'll be sharing fall-inspired fun all week long!

Designer Sampler: Block #3

We're celebrating National Quilting Month with a Sampler Quilt created using blocks by many of our fabric designers. Throughout the month, we'll share a block made by each of the designers listed below and featuring their newest fabric line, along with directions to sew that block. Come sew with us!

7546-24 Autumnwind Aqua

Make the Block
1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) 2" Autumnwind Cream square. Position the square right sides together on the upper left corner of (1) 5-1/2" Squash Orange square. Stitch on the drawn line, trim seam allowance to 1/4", and press open.

2. Repeat on upper right corner using (1) 2" Autumnwind Aqua square, and on the lower corners using 2" Autumnwind Cream squares.
3. Sew 2" x 2-1/2" Autumnwind Cream pieces to opposite sides of (1) 2-1/2" Autumnwind Orange square.
4. Sew the unit from Step 3 to the unit from Step 2 to make a quarter block. Make a total of (4) quarter blocks using the various 5-1/2" squares.

5. To assemble the block using partial seams, sew the 2-1/2" Autumnwind Aqua square to the Squash Orange quarter block as shown, stopping 1" from the bottom of the Aqua square. Press open.

6. Continue adding quarter blocks, working around the center square. Add the top quarter block next, and then the right quarter block. After the bottom quarter block is added, finish sewing the seam from Step 5 to complete the block.

Jubilee and Jubilee Holiday Virtual Trunk Show

You've seen the sparkle, shimmer and shine of Amanda Murphy's gorgeous Jubilee and Jubilee Holiday collections. Now it's time to see the quilts! We're starting off with the quilt that started it all--the Bernina 125th Anniversary Quilt. Follow along on Bernina's website to be part of the quilt-along.

Bernina 125th Anniversary Quilt
65-1/2" square
"I see this quilt as a mixture of modern and traditional. It features classic blocks, but the layout is modern with the big open border space. My favorite part of the quilt is probably the quilting in the border and how it really integrates the octagonal framework of the quilt itself. The digitized quilting motifs are available as part of the embroidery collection."

See Amanda's additional patterns:
Diamond Jubilee
68-1/2" square
"This quit is very dramatic looking. I think the gray background with the gold/yellow prints creates a modern look. It's paper pieced, but a very simple paper piecing, and then it's just appliqued onto the background."
Click here to purchase the pattern.

Platinum Jubilee

65" x 90"
"This pattern is 10" square friendly, but I used yardage because I wanted to make it without the red. It experiments with piecing in the sashing rather than the blocks."
Click here to purchase the pattern.

Here's the red and green version using Jubilee and Jubilee Holiday:

Ruby Jubilee
56-1/2" x 80-1/2"
"This is a take-off on a classic red and white quilt. It's a fun quilt to piece, with multiple different blocks. I wanted a quilt that used primarily the red prints from the collection. I think this would look interesting in black and white as well!"
Click here to purchase the pattern.

And the red and green version:

Hanging Ruler Organizer
"With my Good Measures rulers coming out, I wanted to sew an organizer for someone who hates making bags, like me. It's super easy--you quilt the fabric, then topstitch the pockets on, and add the binding."
Click here to purchase the pattern.

Christmas Magic Tree Skirt
"I designed this quick and easy tree skirt (made using 2-1/2" strips) for my upcoming Christmas Magic collection and then couldn't resist making it in Jubilee Holiday!"

Star Jubilee
(shown here in green!)

"This free quilt pattern is available on my website and uses a section of the ruler panel."

Lucky
