Welcome back for the sixth day of our Mug Rug Blog Hop!
Julie from The Crafty Quilter is here today, sharing an adorable pieced house mug rug made using the Sweet Tweet collection. Try out her design (it would make a cute pillow, too!), and then read how you can enter for a chance to win a fat quarter bundle of fabric!
Hey
everyone! I’m so glad to be
participating in the Mug Rug Blog Hop at Sew In Love {with Fabrics}. My name is Julie Cefalu and I blog at The Crafty Quilter where I share all kinds of tips and inspiration
for your quilting and sewing pleasure.
I love small projects that can be finished in a day or two and this mug
rug fits the bill perfectly!
I
love bright and whimsical colors, so I chose the Sweet Tweet line from Benartex
to build my Happy House Mug Rug.
This piece in particular, the Sunshine Birdhouse, was my inspiration:
Supplies:
1/8
yard (or scraps) light blue fabric for the sky
1/8
yard (or scraps) pink for the roof (Sunshine Geo Pink)
1/8
yard (or scraps) white floral for the grass (Pom Pom Flowers White)
1/8
yard (or scraps) green for the tree (Sunshine Geo Lime)
1/8
yard (or scraps) yellow for the house (Sunshine Geo Yellow/Blue)
Scraps
of red and turquoise for the door, windows and tree trunk
1
fat quarter for the backing (Sunshine Birdhouse, Lt. Blue)
1
8” x 11” piece of batting (I like using Thermolam)
Cutting
Instructions:
Light
blue fabric:
·
(2)
2 ½” squares
·
(2)
1 ¾” x 3” rectangles
·
(2)
1” x 2” rectangles
·
1
½” x 3 ½” rectangle
·
(4)
1” squares
Pink
fabric: (1) 2 ½” x 6 ½” rectangle
Yellow
fabric:
·
(2)
1 ¼” x 3 ½” rectangles
·
(2)
1” x 3 ½” rectangles
·
(2)
1 ½” x 2” rectangles
·
(2)
1” x 1 ½” rectangles
·
(1)
2” x 1 ½” rectangle
White
floral fabric: (1) 1 ½” x 9 ½”
rectangle
Green
Fabric: (1) 2” x 2 ½” rectangle
Red
fabric: (1) 2” x 2 ½” rectangle
Turquoise
fabric: (2) 1 ½” squares, and (1)
1” x 3” rectangle
Assembly
Instructions:
Roof: Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side
of the (2) 2 ½” squares of light blue fabric. Place one on each end of the pink 2 ½” x 6 ½” roof rectangle
and stitch on the diagonal line.
Press to the corner and trim seam allowance.
House: Lay out the house, window and door
pieces as show in the photo below.
Stitch pieces together into door and window units.
Sew
these units together to make the house.
Attach
the roof to the house! The house
should now measure 6 ½” wide by 5 ½” tall.
Tree: Draw a diagonal line on the 1” light
blue squares. Place these on each
corner of the green 2” x 2 ½” rectangle.
I find that using some washable glue instead of pins makes this easier
to sew. Stitch on the diagonal lines and press to the corner. Trim seam allowance to ¼”.
Lay
out the light blue sky pieces, tree and tree trunk as shown below. Stitch pieces together.
The
tree unit should measure 3 ½” x 5 ½”.
Stitch
the tree unit to the house unit.
Add the 1 ½” x 9 ½” rectangle of grass to the bottom and you’ve built
yourself a house!
Layer,
baste and quilt your mug rug. You
could just stitch in the ditch for the main house and tree and/or you could add
some free motion quilting to add some pizazz!
Thanks
for hanging out with me today! If
you want to see more house blocks, visit The Crafty Quilter to find out what I’ve been “building”!

ReplyDeleteThe aqua area rugs are available in many designs and styles. Some of the colors will match your existing furniture, and some will not. You might want to go with a lighter colorful Aqua rug, or the rug covering the furniture will appear too busy. Besides, you can buy an aqua rug 8x10 at a wholesale discount rate.
