We Love Our Pets Week: Rescue Me

We're continuing We Love Our Pets Week by sharing "Rescue Me," a quilt designed by Melanie Greseth and Joanie Holton that's featured in Fons & Porter's Easy Quilts summer 2017 issue. The quilt, featuring Rose Ann Cook's Joey the Shop Dog collection, fits perfectly into an issue that focuses on giving quilts.

"Rescue Me" designed by Melanie Greseth and Joanie Holton;
pieced by Vicki Swanson and quilted by Naomi Polzin;
featured in Fons & Porter's Easy Quilts Summer 2017

We asked Joanie to tell us about this adorable quilt:

What attracted you to the Joey fabrics?
It’s such a fun, playful collection. I have a rescue dog, Goldie, so I thought the idea behind it was fabulous. I especially love the paw print fabric.

Tell us about your quilt design.
We used a couple different block designs, so the quilt is still accessible, even for beginners, but more fun than just one block repeating. Having a different row of blocks on the top and the bottom helps to anchor the design.

Tell us more about those top and bottom borders.
It gives the quilt a more modern feel—not everything is symmetrical and evenly spaced. I think the design meshes together traditional and modern—pinwheel and Irish Chain blocks with the more random top and bottom border. It add spontaneity and provides a fun twist.

Why did you choose the lime print for the background?
I’m drawn to green—it’s so fresh and creates a pop. It also allows the different blues to shine in the blocks.

What’s your favorite part about the quilt?
I like how the Irish Chain blocks create a pathway around the Kaleidoscope blocks.

We Love Our Pets Week

Back in the fall, we joined with Petfinder to raise awareness for shelter pets through the Piece for Shelter Pets initiative.

Piece for Shelter Pets is making another push, and we're excited to be hosting We Love Our Pets Week here on the blog to join in the fun! We'll be sharing some of our favorite pet-themed fabric collections, showing a magazine project made with the Joey the Shop Dog fabric, and then sharing a special tutorial by Rose Ann Cook for making a small dog quilt. Join us today on National Pet Day as we celebrate our furry friends, and if you're considering a pet, we urge you to visit your local shelter!

Quilt Along Recap

Happy Thursday!
Back in February, we hosted the Everyone's A Star Quilt Along, where three quilters demonstrated how to make three different star blocks (using three different fabric lines!) and assemble them into a lap quilt. We hope you enjoyed following along as we stitched, and maybe even started your own version of the quilt!

Click here to find all the Quilt Along posts.

We also offered a prize opportunity to anyone who pieced a version of the quilt along quilt using Benartex, Kanvas, or Contempo fabric. We're excited to show you one of our sample quilts that has been finished, as well as two winners who stitched (and finished) their own versions using our fabrics.

First up, Stephanie Sheridan's Everyone's A Star quilt, made using the Liberty Garden prints.

Linda Leathersich quilted this, stitching in the ditch around the stars to help them pop, and then adding curly swirls in the sashing and a super fun and modern straight line border design.

Next, our winners:
Carolann created her quilt using Fernwood and Palm Court prints in a lovely aqua version:

And Janice, who used bright Fleurish stripes, mixed with black and white:

Beautiful job, ladies! Thanks for sewing along with us!

You can still quilt along with us! Click here to find all the Quilt Along posts and get started.
