Thanking our Veterans

Today especially, we'd like to send out a extra special thank you to veterans of our Armed Forces. Their sacrifices created and sustained our country, and we are grateful to them!

One wonderful way that we as quilters can thank veterans is to make and donate quilts.  Both Quilts of Valor and Quilts of Honor are wonderful organizations that work diligently to award quilts to veterans. If you know of any other organizations that serve this purpose, please leave a comment below!

We currently have two patriotic-colored collections idea for making quilts for veterans. Each collection includes a free quilt pattern; check with the organization you're working with for size requirements.

Oh My Stars! by Dover Hill Studio is chock-full of stripes, stars, and even fireworks!

Use Oh My Stars! to stitch a truly patriotic quilt: the "American Dream" quilt designed by Diane Nagle.
Download the free quilt pattern here.

The Heritage collection, also by Dover Hill Studio, features mini prints in shades of red, blue and cream, reminiscent of designs from the turn of the century.

Heidi Pridemore's "American Tradition" quilt also features stars, perfect for a veteran.

Thank a veteran today!

Chelsea

Today we have another Dover Hill Studio collection--very different from the Heritage prints we showed you recently, but just as fun! Chelsea brings back the turquoises and olive greens of the 70s in retro-style prints. Big 70s-era florals and tapestry prints, a classic paisley, and cool coordinates. Great for accents in a neutral family room (pillows! curtains! a cozy couch quilt!) or a redecorated guest bedroom.

A Taste of Americana

If you love vintage prints and a patriotic palette, we know you'll love the new Heritage Reds & Blues collection from Dover Hill Studio. These mini prints are beautiful in rich reds and burgundies and deep navies and colonial blues, all accented with warm cream tones. The details in these prints are reminiscent of the old mill-engraved prints from the 1800s. Our favorite? The wallpaper stripe, available in six different color combinations.
We've split the fabrics up into blue and red palettes below, but of course they work well together too.

Ready to use these gorgeous red and blue prints? Try the two-block design in the "American Tradition" by Heidi Pridemore. This free quilt pattern is available on our website.

(p.s. Watch for a table runner pattern featuring these prints in the upcoming issue of our Fat Quarterly newsletter!)

Feeling patriotic?

A great red, white and blue collection inspires patriotic pride--you might even start humming "America the Beautiful" or "The Star Spangled Banner" while you read this post! :)
With parades, fireworks, and all things red, white and blue colored just around the corner for the 4th of July, we're sharing our Oh My Stars collection by Dover Hill Studio.

These fantastic patriotic prints feature stars and stripes (of course!), as well as ribbons, a firework-inspired print, and great watercolor-style tonals. The American Classic prints are red, blue, and a warm cream, with some fun burlap texture in the background. The Weathered prints work in tan as well, with more burlap texture. Use them together or on their own and you'll create a red, white and blue beauty!

Red, white and blue prints are always a great match for a star quilt. This star-happy design, "American Dream" by Diane Nagle, is available for free download from our website.

When a quilt design becomes a table runner

Sometimes you see a quilt pattern you like but don't actually want to make the entire quilt. Cue the table runner...a smaller and quicker version of your new favorite quilt design! In the just-released June 2016 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting, quilt tester Laura Boehnke transformed "The Wheel Deal" quilt into a table runner using our Divine Twine prints by Dover Hill Studio.
Simple, quick, and most importantly, awfully attractive!

A new look for twine

Raise your hand if you have a ball of twine in a kitchen drawer. Most of us do, and most of us don't give it a second thought. While useful, twine is fairly boring.
Until today. Dover Hill Studio's new Divine Twine collection turns this handy rope product into a thing of beauty. Twine outlines flowers, medallions, paisleys, swirls, and more in this rich, masculine-colored collection. Who knew twine could be so attractive?!

Here's a closer look at the medallion print--these medallions can be fussy-cut into 6-1/2" squares--perfect for adding intricate detail to a quilt block.

Divine Twine has two free quilt patterns. The first pairs the prints with coordinating Burlap colors to create a quilt made of contrasting shades.

"Garden Courtyard"
designed by Stephanie Sheridan and Linda Leathersich of Stitched Together Studios

The second uses fussy-cut medallion blocks alternating with a secondary pieced block with a nautical feel.
