Home Grown Virtual Trunk Show

Today we're going to take you on a virtual trunk show of Nancy Halvorsen's Home Grown projects.
Nancy has shared them all in her book, Home Grown. Take a peek:

In Our House
The book is based on this quilt--nine different applique scenes, each featuring a positive message.

In addition to the quilt, Nancy shows how the blocks can be used in smaller formats--quicker to sew, easier to make, and fun to give as gifts.

Nancy says, "I haven't done applique on a dark background before and I love how the colors pop on the gray. The center block is one of my favorites. I love how it turned out. Love Lives Here is another one of my favorites, and Believe In yourself."

The center block as a pillow:

Dream Big: perfect for a baby's room:

Three blocks in a vertical wall hanging:

Nancy also used many of the motifs from the quilt on tea towels--so sweet!

Sweet mother-daughter aprons:

Chef aprons too!

The book also includes two additional quilts.

Home Grown
This quilt features the blocks from the panels, as well as pieced letters, houses, and hearts.

Trellis Garden
This pieced quilt is made up of scrappy flowers. I love all the colors in it!

And don't forget the free quilt pattern, available on the Benartex website:

Warp & Weft Virtual Trunk Show

We've got a real treat for you today: A virtual trunk show of Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr's projects made using their Warp & Weft fabrics. They've created five projects, and they're all conveniently featured in the Warp & Weft publication. They've also shared a free quilt pattern (see Tube Socks below).

Plaid Happy
47" x 76"
This quilt uses the gray and white plaid in the background of the blocks. That one check just transforms the rest of the quilt.
Click here to purchase the publication containing the Plaid Happy pattern
and here to purchase the kit.

Plain Spoken
51" x 77"
This quilt mixes the yarn dyes with prints from Printology. They play well together! You don't have to have equal amounts of every fabric, but you do need good contrast among the prints and yarn dyes so the pieces don't blend into each other.
Click here to purchase the publication containing the Plain Spoken pattern
and here to purchase the kit.

Triple Play
50" x 72"
For this quilt, we chose a low-contrast palette of yarn dyes and Printology fabrics--the "worker bee" tonal fabrics. The pieced sections are made using improvisational piecing techniques, which you can cut wonky or straight.
Click here to purchase the publication containing the Triple Play pattern
and here to purchase the kit.

Fringe Benefits
24" square pillow or wall hanging
These squares are appliqued on, and then stitched down with a 1/4" seam allowance. Then we pulled a few threads out to fray the edges for a textured look.

Tube Socks
47" x 78"
When we decided to develop modern quilts, our first rule of thumb was not to use traditional 19th century patterns--we wanted to use motifs from our modern lifestyle. Tube socks--like our daughter's soccer socks--definitely fit into that category. They made their heyday in the 80s, but they've made a comeback too. This was a fun quilt to design and puts a smile on our faces whenever we see it.

By Hand: Virtual Trunk Show

The past few days, we've been sharing Amy Friend's By Hand collection with you, and we're finishing up the week with a virtual trunk show of quilts Amy designed. Several of the quilts use improvisational paper piecing--Amy's go-to technique--but if that's not for you, you'll find designs that use traditional piecing as well. Enjoy!

Magic Spark
60” x 76”
"This quilt is based on improvisational paper piecing techniques. I was playing iwht the idea of radiating lines, and I started changing the size and the rotation to create a really neat spinning star. Where four blocks meet, you get another type of star. I put the prints in spectrum order, and the light and dark purple stars in the center really pop out. I used the Stripe Fade print in the background, which adds a ton of interest to the quilt. I’ll be teaching this at QuiltCon in February."

Negativity
60” x 68”
"The first version of this quilt was all solids and hung at QuiltCon last year in the small quilts category. This is also an improv paper piecing quilt, with a small repeated half hexagon. I love that when  you remove a pair of half hexagons, you get a negative hexagon shape. It’s super easy to make."

Dogwood
60” x 72”
"This quilt is also foundation pieced. I wanted something flower like, and I think this looks like a simple dogwood blossom because of the four points. I removed a row of piecing to create a well defined area of negative space. I think this quilt has a modern aesthetic even while using a block with a more traditional feel."

Game Board
60” x 72”
"This is for people who don’t like foundation piecing as much as I do. It’s strip pieced with some half-square triangles as well. I played with the warm and cool colors of the spectrum, pairing each dark next to its coordinating light in the strip. The blocks are offset so some of them appear to fall off the quilt. This quilt has a lot of fun negative space for machine quilting."

Keyed Up
76" square

"I wanted to keep this quilt simple, and it's made of easy-to-piece strips. The design plays with the light and dark pairings of each color, and the warm and cool strip sets are staggered a bit. There's plenty of neat negative space within the design as well."

Words to Live By Virtual Trunk Show

We hope you've felt inspired by Cherry's Words to Live By fabrics this week! Today we're sharing a virtual trunk show of Cherry's quilts made with her fabrics. Enjoy!

City Block
59" x 77"
"The title says it all. The quilts loo like city blocks with little connecting shapes. It's all appliqued, and it's the same block, just rotated so they connect. I used the appliques to create the transparent effect."
Click here to purchase the City Block pattern.

Bee-utiful

20" x 27"
"This one is fun because it includes words. In my Front Porch collection, I had a bee print and really liked it. I started creating cute little sayings that started with "bee." It's a small and super easy project with a small amount of hand embroidery for the words and spirals."
Click here to purchase the Bee-utiful pattern.

Alphabet Soup
48" x 58"
"This includes appliques for the entire alphabet in upper and lower case, plus the flowers and keys. The pattern comes with instructions to make the quilt shown, but you can also make your own word quilt. I give you the templates and a grid, plus a formula to figure out yardage, and you can build your own. There's also Alphabet Soup in the Hoop - for all the shapes done in a standard hoop on your embroidery machine. You can stitch out each letter with a satin stitch or blanket stitch finish. It takes all of 5 minutes to do a letter."
Click here to purchase the Alphabet Soup pattern.

Buon Appetito
12" x 32" wall hangings
18" x 13" place mats
"I'm teaching in Italy in October, so it was perfect to give this pattern an Italian name. I wanted this line to be home decor friendly. I used the idea of my Bon Appetit pattern but redid it with more elegance--more formal silverware on a pieced background made from the wood grain and lace print. The tables have an educational purpose--most people know where the fork and spoon go, but it's great to have on the kitchen table for when your kids or grandkids set the table."

Cherry also created a free quilt pattern, Live By Love for her Words to Live by collection using the Love panel. Fussy-cut each block and surround it with pre-cut strips for a quick and easy quilt.
