Welcome to our Words to Live By hop, featuring Cherry Guidry's new collection. We're excited to share four projects with you this week. Each day you'll also have a chance to win a fat quarter bundle of some of the Words to Live By fabric. Enjoy!
Today's project is a tutorial we're sharing right here on the blog for the Happiness Wall Hanging. It's perfect for a kitchen or foyer wall--a visual reminder to find the happy things in life. The wall hanging combines fussy cut sections of the panel with coordinates and sews up very quickly! Don't forget to scroll through the whole tutorial to find out how to win a fat quarter bundle of Words to Live By prints.
Here are the fabrics we used:
Materials:
1 Happiness panel
1/3 yard red words print
1/4 yard gray medallion print
1/2 yard gray key print (includes binding)
1/4 yard turquoise words print
1/4 yard yellow medallion print
7/8 yard turquoise daisy print for backing*
27" x 43" piece of batting
*This is really tight--if you're having it quilted on a longarm, you'll need a longer backing piece.
Cutting:
Note: Cutting from panel will be listed in the steps below.
From the red words print:
(3) 1-1/2" x 24-1/2" strips
(2) 1-1/2" x 21" strips
(2) 2-1/4" x 7-1/2" pieces
(1) 1-1/2" x 6-1/2" piece
(2) hearts**
From the gray medallion print:
(1) 3-1/2" x 16" piece
(1) 3" x 24-1/2" strip
(2) 2" x 24-1/2" strip
From the gray key print:
(2) 2-1/2" x 24-1/2" strips
(4) 2-1/4" x 42" strips for binding
From the turquoise words print:
(1) 2-1/2" x 42" strip
From the yellow medallion print:
(1) 2-1/2" x 42" strip
(1) 3-1/2" x 7" piece
**Download the heart template here. Trace (2) onto the paper side of fusible web. Cut out loosely around the hearts and fuse to the wrong side of red words fabric. Cut out on the drawn lines.
Make the Rows
Refer to the row labels as shown while you assemble your quilt top. Fussy cut panel pieces to center each design as shown.
Row 1: Fussy-cut (1) 6-3/4" x 24-1/2" Happiness panel piece.
Row 2: (1) 1-1/2" x 24-1/2" red words strip
Row 3 and 4: Fussy-cut (1) 3-1/2" x 16" Happiness is a choice... piece. Sew (1) 3-1/2" x 16" gray medallion piece to the top. Sew (1) 1-1/2" x 6-1/2" red words piece to the left edge. Fussy-cut (1) 8" x 6-1/2" Be Happy and Smile piece and sew to the red words piece. Sew (1) 1-1/2" x 24-1/2" red word strip to the bottom.
Row 5: (1) 2-1/2" x 24-1/2" gray key strip
Row 6: Sew the 2-1/2" x 42" turquoise words strip and 2-1/2" x 42" yellow medallion strip together lengthwise. Crosscut into (12) 2-1/2" wide segments. Join the segments to make a checkerboard strip.
Row 8: Fussy-cut (1) 5-1/2" x 21" If you want to be happy... strip. Sew 1-1/2" x 21" red words strips to the top and bottom. Add 2-1/4" x 7-1/2" red words pieces to the short ends.
Row 9: (1) 2-1/2" x 24-1/2" gray key strip
Row 10: Fussy-cut (1) 8" x 3-1/2" If you want to find happiness... piece. Sew to the left side of (1) 7" x 3-1/2" yellow medallion piece. Fussy-cut (1) 14-1/2" x 4" There is no way to happiness... piece and sew to the bottom. Fussy cut (1) 10-1/2" x 7" The happiest people... piece and sew to the right side. Fuse two red words hearts to the yellow piece.
Row 11: (1) 1-1/2" x 24-1/2" red words strip
Row 12: (1) 3" x 24-1/2" gray medallion strip
Sew the rows together in the order listed. Layer the quilt top with backing and batting and quilt as desired. Use the (4) 2-1/4" x 42" gray key strips to bind the quilt.
Isn't the daisy print perfect on the back?
Simply wavy lines add quilting texture without distracting from the words in this wall hanging.
