Autumn in the Air: Faboolous Fun

It may be May, but Autumn is in the Air! Our newest fall collections are hitting quilt shops right now, and we're introducing them here on the blog and sharing some autumn quilt inspiration all week long.

The last day of our blog hop is Halloween-themed. Faboolous Fun, from Kanvas, features ghosts, skeletons, pumpkins, spooky eyes, and spider webs. And did we mention that the prints glow in the dark? So fun!

Alison from Little Bunny Quilts used the bright Halloween prints in Faboolous Fun to sew a spooky table runner. Head over to her blog to learn more and enter for a chance to win a FQ bundle of Faboolous Fun.

Alison says, "I really enjoy machine applique -- the process is rather soothing to me! This collection was certainly a perfect choice to make a Halloween-themed table runner incorporating simple machine applique -- and how cool is it that the prints all glow in the dark? I decided that using the lime green print would be the best choice for the main fabric for this project and used black solid for my appliques. A little strip piecing and blanket stitching later, I have another table runner ready for fall decorating!"

Autumn in the Air: Harvest Gold

It may be May, but Autumn is in the Air! Our newest fall collections are hitting quilt shops right now, and we're introducing them here on the blog and sharing some autumn quilt inspiration all week long.

Today's featured collection is Harvest Gold from Kanvas. This elegant collection starts with a large floral on cream and black, and a coordinating border stripe. Add in autumn flowers with leaves, pears, and regal medallions, all delicately enhanced with gold metallic.

Visit Debby @debbykratovilquilts to see how she used these gorgeous metallic prints to make a medallion-style quilt (plus a chance to win fat quarters from the Harvest Gold collection).

Debby says, "I am quite taken with a vintage block called Rose Star. And because that's what I've been thinking of lately, I decided to make it one more time using the Harvest Gold Collection from Kanvas. I selected several fabrics and the gorgeous, large scale border print. I replaced the center 6 kite shapes with a single hexagon and I was able to fussy cut a beautiful motif from the main print. I added a thin, black edging to set it off against the other prints."

We'll be sharing fall-inspired fun all week long!

Star Spangled Runner

Memorial Day and the 4th of July are right around the corner, but there's still plenty of time to stitch up a patriotic project!
Ramona Sorensen's All Hands on Deck table runner is featured in the Summer 2019 issue of Easy Quilts magazine. This red, white and blue runner is made using a Card Trick block variation and features the Star Spangled collection from Kanvas. We asked Ramona to talk to us about her design.

What attracted you to the Star Spangled collection?
It reminded me of summer--picnics, parades, friends and families getting together.

Do you have a favorite print in the fabric line?
I like the whole collection, but my favorites are the 4th of July prints and the fireworks prints.

How did you come up with the design?
It started with the block. I was making a quilt for a club at work. I picked up two card trick blocks to stitch together and realized there was another block "hidden" in them. After some thought, I sketched out the block and then I started playing with quilt designs.

How did you choose the border treatment?
When  I was experimenting with designs, I decided that the square in a square blocks would make a good edge finish for the project. They fill in the zig zag edges of the blocks.

What do you like best about the runner?
I like that you can use a centerpiece without taking anything away from the design. And you can cover it with serving platters and the touches of red and blue still peek through to remind you of the occasion being celebrated.

What makes table runners so appealing?
You can always hang them if you prefer--there are no rules that say it can only go on a table.

Spring Pop: Field of Dreams

Need a little floral pop?
Spring is around the corner...we promise!
Stephanie Sheridan's Wildflower Meadow quilt is featured in the newest issue of McCall's Quilting. This quilt is packed with blooms from Kanvas' Field of Dreams.

"Wildflower Meadow" designed and pieced by Stephanie Sheridan
and machine quilted by Linda Leathersich;
featured in the March/April issue of McCall's Quilting.

What attracted you to the fabric line? Do you have a favorite print?
I loved the all of the flowers with the touch of metallic - sometimes it is fun to just design a pretty quilt with pretty fabrics. My favorite fabric is the focal print - such great detail and colors!

Did you fussy cut flowers for the block centers?
I did! I knew that I wanted both of the hummingbirds (they remind me of my great grandmother) and one of each of the types of flowers. Once I cut out all of the squares I played around with placement on my design wall until I got them the way I wanted them - then I took a picture with my cell phone so that I could keep them in their place as I was making the blocks and assembling the quilt.

How did you choose the coordinates to use around the floral squares?
They pretty much chose themselves ... the two shades of blue and green just seemed perfect for framing the focal squares.

Can you talk about your border choices?
I chose the scattered flowers on black and kept the inner border the same width as the sashing to serve as a bridge between the center of the quilt and the floral mitered outer border - it just helped the whole quilt flow together.

How did the design come about?
I loved this fabric from the first time I saw it and knew that I wanted to create something pretty with it. This quilt uses two construction techniques that are really useful in any quilter's repertoire - partial seams and mitered corners. I hope that quilters will enjoy challenging themselves to make this quilt.

Can you talk about the quilting?
My mom continued the "pretty" theme with the quilting - lots of swirls and feathers, with a beautiful feathered wreath over each of the blocks.

What do you see this being used for?
This quilt is a great throw size. It would be perfect for those cool summer evenings when you are out on the porch swing, or could make a great wall quilt. Heck, I want to use it on the couch tonight to remind me that winter won't last forever here in Pennsylvania!
