The Great Bracket Reveal

We asked...you answered!
Last week we asked for nominations of your favorite Benartex and Kanvas fabric lines so that we could host a Fan Favorite bracket to go along with the March Madness NCAA basketball brackets beginning this week.

Based on your nominations, we've created our 2013 bracket.

How to play:
  • The first round runs March 21-24. Each day we'll post 2 "games" on Facebook, pitting collections against each other as shown in the bracket. Be sure to visit our Facebook page each day to play along.
  • Simply click on the appropriate dot in the Facebook post to vote for the fabric collection you want to win in each game. You can only vote once per game.
  • Share the link with your friends to help your favorite fabric collection win!
  • The voting for each game will be open for 24 hours, starting at 10 am.
  • After the voting closes each day, we'll post an updated bracket here on the blog.
  • On March 25, we'll feature the eight remaining collections. The second round begins March 26. More details to follow then.

Need a refresher on what these collections look like?
Below, are the 16 players (aka fabric collections) in our Fan Favorite Bracket.
(The collections are listed here in alphabetical order and we've picked just a few swatches from each. Click on the name to see the entire collection, including other colorways, over on our website.)

Sew in love with Sun-Kissed

If you've seen the cover of the April-May issue of The Quilter magazine, you've seen Michele D'Amore's Sun-Kissed collection in a fresh (and gorgeous!) quilt. This lap-size beauty was designed, stitched and quilted by Julie Lynch, who shares a bit of her design process with us below.

About the Trip Around the World design:
Julie: I tried a traditional Trip Around the World design first, but it didn't have the same appeal as the on-point version you see below. I had a stack of squares from each fabric, and I just played. I'd agonize—and if I didn't like how the colors looked next to each other, I picked up the squares and tried again until it worked. I don't have a design wall, so it's all done on the floor.

About the Sun-Kissed fabrics:
Julie: This quilt was really fun to make. To me, the fabrics had a 60s vibe. I loved the graphic prints. They were fun. The collection has a great mix of light, medium and dark, and size variation. The solids (from the Colors for Quilters line) were perfect because the prints needed a quiet place to rest your eye.

Details matter:
Julie: I purposely oriented the striped squares (3rd print out from the center) as you see them to create a zigzag illusion. I used the large circular print in two very different ways in the quilt. The cream background version is chopped up into squares in the quilt. But the design needed a bigger statement, so I used the darker brown version I a big border to help hold the quilt together, visually. I really liked the boldness of this border print.

Isn't a Trip Around the World usually square?
Julie: It didn't look right being plain old square to me. I thought it needed to be elongated a bit. I added in the olive-y green and the blue print squares as additional rows on the top and bottom to create a rectangle

Design tip:
Julie: When you have a quilt top laid out, step away from it overnight, and take a photo of it as well. Coming back to it with a fresh eye, as well as seeing it on a camera screen, helps you see your design with a more impartial eye.

Fun fact:
Julie: I don't use a computer. I've been sewing quilts for Benartex for more than 25 years. They send me a collection—it's always a surprise when it arrives and I start playing around, working with what they've sent. If I don't have an idea immediately when I see the fabric, I often just start cutting and playing with the prints on the floor.

p.s. Have you nominated a fabric collection for our March Madness Fan Favorite bracket yet? Maybe it's Sun-Kissed, featured on The Quilter's cover, or maybe it's a different line. Read more about the bracket here and nominate your favorites in the comment sections here or here, on our Facebook page.

March Madness, Fabric Style!

Today is Worldwide Quilting Day, the perfect opportunity to announce a new contest!

It's that time of year again…when half of the U.S. is glued to their television/computer/phone watching the Men's (and Women's) college basketball tournaments, and the other half could care less. Regardless of which camp you fall into, we're hosting our own bracket here at Benartex.

That's right…help cheer your favorite Benartex or Kanvas fabric line on to victory!

Here's how it works:
First, we need to set the field of competitors. Between March 16th and19th, you can nominate your favorite Kanvas and Benartex fabric collections.
  • Each person can nominate up to 3 fabric lines.
  • You can nominate any collection currently featured on our website, though we encourage you to choose more recent lines that are still widely available.
  • Share your nomination either on our Facebook page or as a comment below this blog post. Please nominate only through one social media outlet, not both.

After nominations close at 11:59 EST on March 19th, we'll use your suggestions to create a 16-fabric bracket. We'll post the bracket on March 21st and the ''games'' will begin!

From March 21st through April 8th, fabric collections will ''compete'' against each other. Check our Facebook page each day so you can vote for your favorite in that day's game, and then visit the blog to see the updated bracket. Like the basketball tournament, we'll work down from 16 collections to 8, to 4 and then to the final 2.

On April 4th, we'll announce the two fabric lines in the running for the title of Fan Favorite. Voting will be open on Facebook from April 4th to April 7th, and the winner will be crowned on Monday April 8th.

We'll also be giving away some fabric prizes to go along with our version of March Madness…stay tuned for more details!

Now Serving...Arnold's Diner

Don't you love the nostalgic feel of a diner? Whether you remember diners at their heyday, from movies and television shows (Happy Days!), those beloved mom-and-pop diners that are still thriving, or even just diners reinvented for the present day through restaurant chains like Johnny Rocket's, the very thought of a mouth-watering burger, fries, and homemade shake is sure to make your lips smile and your stomach growl. Let's set the scene, shall we? We'll go for atmosphere only so we don't ruin anyone's diet...

Now that you're in the mood, check out Arnold's Diner, a new Kanvas line by Maria Kalinowski.

What was the inspiration behind this line?
I was inspired by the 1950’s retro Route 66 look that is happening right now.  It's an all-American theme that everyone can relate to. It is a novelty line that has a playful yet very user-friendly whimsical look. I had a lot of fun designing this line.

Which fabric is your favorite?
I'm not sure I can pick just one. The checkerboard—it's such a bold size and can be used for anything. Everyone remembers the checkerboard floors in diners. They're great for trimming curtains. I used a similar pattern to cover the tables for my son's second birthday party and it really made a statement.

The diners and coffee cups are also a favorite. The coffee cups are so crisp and clean with the retro colors really making them sparkle.

I especially love the menu—it has everything that represents childhood, when you were with your parents on those long road trips and stopped at the diner.   The typical American diet: cola, fries, hamburgers and ice cream sundaes.!!!!!!!

What was the most challenging part of designing this line?
To make it unique from any other lines featuring this theme.  I was aiming for a bold and graphic style. Diners of that time period were sooo shiny and clean and graphic.

What do you envision this line being used for?
I can see aprons, mitts, placemats, quilts, pillows…how about curtains in a breakfast nook or a lunch bag?  Anything really for table top or home décor.

These cafe curtains brighten up the kitchen at the Benartex/Kanvas office!

Thanks Maria!

So...we've gotta ask! After seeing this line, where are you headed first--to your local quilt shop, or to get a hamburger, fries, and a shake?!

Tribute to Pat Campbell

We mentioned it on Facebook yesterday, but wanted to take a quick minute to remember Pat Campbell here on the blog as well. We were saddened to hear of her passing, and send along thoughts and prayers to her family and friends. An extremely talented quilt artist, designer, and teacher, Pat will be dearly missed by quilters and the entire creative community.

Pat designed the Fossil Fern collection for Benartex more than 15 years ago, and it is still in demand today--so few lines have such a lifespan--it is truly special.

Thank you, Pat, for everything you gave to the quilting and sewing world. You will be missed!

Creativity in Every Breath

Since this blog started, we've been showing you some of our favorite new Kanvas collections, but we haven't really talked about who is behind the Kanvas name.

Meet Maria.

Maria Kalinowski is the creative force behind Kanvas, Benartex's new division featuring novelty prints and more. And what a force she is! Head into your local quilt shop, and chances are, you'll be able to identify Kanvas prints simply by their fresh, graphic look. From popsicles to beer bottles, and the New York skyline to retro diner prints, you'll find designs that make you smile, ready to be used in your next project. Maria designs fabric lines herself and also works with a select team of artists to create everything Kanvas. She recently spoke about her work and her design process.

Tell us about your background.
Art is not what I do but who I am, I have been painting and drawing since I was a child and come from a long line of dress designers and graphic designers in my family. I never had any question about what I was going to do in my life, it came completely naturally.

My background is formal training in the fine arts. During high school I painted primarily in watercolors, landscapes, barns and was very well known for my florals. During one of my art exhibitions in Connecticut a professor had mentioned that my paintings looked like fabric designs. This is where the idea came to me that maybe I should pursue a career in textile design. I was one of the youngest members of the Ridgefield guild of Artist’s where I participated in many juried art shows, sold and had one-man exhibitions throughout Fairfield County, Connecticut. I then graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence Rhode Island, with a BFA degree in textile design.

Upon graduating I took my first job on 7th Avenue designing women’s fashion as a board artist, and the rest is history.

What do you like best about designing fabric?
I chose fabric design primarily because it is a mix between the fine arts and design. There are no limits to what you can use fabric for these days, and it always surprises me to see how the quilters and manufacturers create products or quilts with my fabrics. Quilting and sewing is a whole other talent in itself. I am awed and amazed at what the quilters create from so many tiny pieces of fabric.

How would you describe your style?
I would say my style is eclectic with an edge. I have a love for designing beautiful elegant more traditional lines, such as my blue horizon peacock as well as my bold, edgy novelties that evoke humor and a definite point of view.

What do you do in your free time?
My free time is limited as I commute to New York from Connecticut and have a 12-year-old son David. He keeps my weekends pretty busy and is the joy of my life. I do love theatre, movies and concerts. But mostly I spend my time entertaining family and friends in my home in Westport.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
My mind never rests. I get inspiration from everywhere and am always looking for the next new concepts. I draw from life such as my hero dogs print came from the 10th anniversary of 9/11 that just passed. So TV, world events, movies and magazines are what inspire me. It is endless and can be a bit exhausting because there is no way to turn it off. It is who I am.

Do you name the fabric collections yourself?
We have so much fun naming the fabric collections. Sometimes the names come before I have even conceived the designs and sometimes the groups help give us the names. This is my studio's favorite part.

What else can you tell us about yourself?
I have been told I have a flare for the dramatic that makes me a great storyteller with a comedic edge. People who are not in my close circle don’t see that side of me. Most people think because of my flare for fashion that I live in NYC, but actually I live in a country farmhouse near the beach in Connecticut. I think the solitude after the hustle and bustle of my busy weeks is what rejuvenates me.
